Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation Awarded Business of the Year by Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce!

The Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation (SSMADC) took the Business of the Year Award (in the 10 to 25 employees category)

“I think what we’ve done is reorganize the entire operation to make it work for us as a company, making sure that our staff are properly trained and we have the ability to give a service to the city of Sault Ste. Marie with the safest, up to date aircraft that we possibly can, along with other services that we offer through other companies, such as our tenants (such as JD Aero),” said Jerry Dolcetti, SSMADC board of directors chair.

“We’ve been able to do that, and each year we’re getting better at it and we’re growing,” Dolcetti said.

“We’ve had amazing growth, closing in on 215,000 passengers a year. We’ve got a great organization and a very supportive board of directors with no political interference which is very key for us, we can do what we need to do in order to make the airport a success,” said Terry Bos, SSMADC president and CEO.

“It feels very good to win tonight,” Bos said.

Airport Sets Record!

Up, up and away.
Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corp., set a passenger level record for December, with 18,576 passengers flying to and from the airport in December, a 3.23 per cent increase over December 2016 — the best December in the airport’s history.
The airport says that in 2017, it saw a 0.57 per cent increase in passenger levels, from 211,619 in 2016 to 212,831 in 2018. During 2017, the airport saw two new records for overall passenger levels in a single month, with August setting a record at 20,055, only to be broken again in October, at 20,667. There were six months in the year, including August and October, that set records for that month.
Terry Bos, Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corp., president and CEO, said he is pleased with the continuing increase in passenger levels.
“The airlines continue to modify schedules in order to provide customers the most convenient travel times,” he said in a release.
The airport is served daily by Air Canada Express, Bearskin Airlines and Porter Airlines. As of Dec.  22, Sunwing returned with its seasonal service to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. This year, the service is scheduled to run until April 2018, with the last departure April 13 and the last return to the Sault on April 20.
“Sunwing has returned for another winter season, and there has been a noticeable increase in the number of American licence plates parking at the airport, which is a promising development,” Bos said.

Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation Carries Out Strategic Planning Session

During a recent strategy session held on October 21st 2017, the Board of Directors and Management Staff of the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation (SSMADC) received a presentation from one of Canada’s leading aviation economists Dr. Mike Tretheway on the current and near term future state of the aviation industry. Following the presentation a strategic planning exercise was carried out with input from the presentation provided. The planning areas covered were airlines and aircraft sizes, operational challenges and opportunities within the next five years, and non-airside development. The board was assisted by Jody Rebek DiCerbo, VIVE (Management Consulting and Events).

The strategy session took an opportunity to focus on some of the successes achieved since the last strategy session held in October 2016. These successes included the expansion of JD Aero and the relocation of Humphrey Aircraft Services to the airport. The previous year has seen stable passenger traffic with 211,711 passenger in the 12 months to September 30th 2017.

This past year has seen further capital investments into the safety and security and general upgrades of the airport of over $1 million. This brings the SSMADC investment into capital upgrades at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport since taking ownership on March 28, 1998 to a total of over $39,500,000.

The retreat provided an opportunity for the board to review these accomplishments and explore ways to further enhance the airport’s ability in meeting its challenges.

Sheehan Announces $960,300 for Sault Ste. Marie Airport

Canadians, tourists and businesses benefit from safe and well-maintained airports. From visiting friends and family, to traveling to medical appointments, or getting goods to market, we rely on our local and regional airports to support and sustain vibrant communities. These airports also provide essential air services including community resupply, air ambulance, search and rescue and forest fire response.

Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, on behalf of the Honourable Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, today announced the government’s $960,300 investment to replace an aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle and associated equipment at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport.

“The Sault Ste. Marie Airport is a vital link for residents and businesses in this region. This project will help ensure continued safe airport operation for passengers, flight crews and employees, while contributing to the community’s economic and social well-being.” said,  – Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie

“As we continue to expand our passenger levels and evolve our aircraft mix, the Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation is grateful to the Federal Government for the contribution of this critical safety equipment and meeting the needs of the travelling public and providing the utmost safety for our staff and travellers.” said,  Terry Bos, President and CEO, Sault Ste. Marie Airport Development Corporation

The funding comes through Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program. Since the Program’s launch in 1995, the Government of Canada has provided more than $784 million for 900 projects at 182 airports across the country.

“The Government of Canada recognizes that safe and efficient airports are vital to the economic and social well-being of smaller communities. In addition to supporting personal travel and tourism, local and regional airports are key connectors for business, health care, social services, and emerging resource development sectors. Our investments help improve access to safe and efficient air transportation options, and deliver on our promise to help build safer, healthier and stronger communities across Canada.” said, Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport.
